Where to Live in Berlin West

Berlin West, formerly known as Friedrichshain is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Berlin, which is situated on the west side of the city. It was originally a part of the Prussian capital and was once a military fortress.

West Berlin was an administrative enclave that included the western most part of Berlin in the pre-WWII days. There was no exact date on when the areas of West Berlin became "West Germany", but 1950 is generally accepted to be the year in which it was established. It is located at the edge of the Brandenburg Gate and is one of the most densely populated areas in Berlin.

The neighborhood was originally made up of four districts; Friedrichshain, Charlottenburg, Neukammerung and Neukollwitz. The West German government did not allow the residents to travel to the eastern neighborhoods such as Kreuzberg, Mitte or Friedrichshain, so these areas were referred to as East Berlin. In June of 1989, the citizens of East Berlin voted to reunite with their West German brothers and this is when West Berlin became West Berlin.

A lot of people visit West Berlin. There are museums and theatres for cultural events. You will find an amusement park in West Berlin, which was once known as "Bauhaus". The West German parliament building is located here, but it has been destroyed in the Second World War.

Some of the most beautiful buildings in Berlin can be found here and include the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag and the Alexanderplatz. The Berlin Wall that divided Berlin and the Berlin Wall Museum still stand. This wall is the tallest manmade structure in the world, but is now a museum for the public to view.

The neighborhoods of West Berlin have experienced a great change over the past few years with a lot of construction taking place. There are some old apartment complexes as well as high rise condos being constructed to house the newly arriving residents.

Many people are looking at these new neighborhoods for apartments and are attracted by the higher rent prices. The apartments are more luxurious and well equipped. They also come equipped with all of the amenities needed in an apartment, such as was mentioned earlier, a pool, a fitness center and a bar.

Many people are choosing these new neighborhoods because they are near the central business district. You will have easy access to all major public transportation systems, which includes the Berlin City Bus.

The neighborhoods in Berlin are changing, but they are becoming a hot home to young families with children who want to live in a great area and near the main business district. West Berlin is one of the most sought after neighborhoods in the world.
