Baden-baden is a wonderful spa town on the western German Black Forest. In the Middle Ages, it was the favourite summer resort for royals, dignitaries, and royalty. The medieval castle at Baden-baden was an important stop on the way to and from the Holy Roman Emperor. Over the centuries, its numerous baths brought fame to this spa town as a fashionable summer resort. The Kurhaus building (1824), situated above the main promenade, is one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture, with large park-lined interior and external balconies. The museum on this site was constructed in 1590-years before it was built to house the archives of the king of Saxony. Beside the Kurhaus building is the majestic, Renaissance-style Spielbank. The museum was designed by the architect Franz Anton Gutschler. In addition to the main museum, there is another one on the main street, located at a smaller building on the opposite side of the river. A replica of St Paul's Cathedral is also located at the Lichtitaler Allee.
