The town of Wedel is located in the district of Schleswig-Holland, in Schleswig, Germany. It's located on the left bank of the Elbe River, about 20 kilometers from Elmshorn, south of Hamburg, and 17 kilometers west of Hamburg. The city is also known as the town of Stemmonskirche. Its name has been a popular choice in reference to the Christian cross and the fact that the church is built on a peninsula in a former fishing harbor.

In Christianity, St. Wedel or St. Mary was a patron saint of sailors, fishermen and those who traveled through difficult waters.
