The Neustadt/Weinstr. Language Classification - A Beginner's Guide

The Neustadt/Weinstr. classification was introduced in 1920 by the German linguist Max Weinreich and linguist Karl Wegner, after conducting research into what languages were commonly used in North Germany. The study showed that the most common language spoken in the region was German and this was in fact the language of Alexander von Humboldt and the rest of his team who founded what would later become the state of Neustadt and we know it as Weimar Germany. The classification was made in order to avoid confusion and it included a number of Germanic languages.

The classification was based on the idea that there were four categories - Standard Germanic, Celtic, Gothic and Baltic - which were used to classify the Germanic dialects. This classification was accepted and used by the International Labor Organization, International Bureau of Weights and Measures and other organisations and it has been used since then.

The classification is useful for linguists and historians as well. For example, it shows where each dialect is spoken, how many people speak it and how many different dialects there are.
