Giessen - An Introduction

Giessen is a small city in south central Germany, just north of Frankfurt. It is known as the birthplace of calculus, with its Mathematikum. Next door to the Liebig Museum is the botanical garden of 17th-century botanist Justus Von Liebig. Also part of the University of Giess, the botanical garden was established in 1610 and currently has over one thousand plant species in its care. Northwest of Giessen lies Burg Gleiberg Castle which overlooks the city.

Giessen has many attractions. The Museum of Modern Art, founded by Gerhard Richter in 1947, is one of its major attractions. There is also the Museum of Fine Arts. The Museum of Musical Instruments is located next door. Also within a walking distance, the Museum of Natural History is popular.
